How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses focused light energy to target the pigment (melanin) in individual hair follicles. The heat from the light damages the follicle enough to slow or stop future hair growth. It works best on dark hair against lighter skin because the laser targets the contrast between hair pigment and surrounding skin. Patients with light hair colors (blonde, grey, red, or white) may see limited results because there is little melanin for the laser to target. Most patients need 6 to 8 treatment sessions spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart to treat hairs across multiple growth cycles. Maintenance sessions may be needed once or twice a year after the initial series is complete. Laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth but may not eliminate it entirely.

Pre-Treatment Health Screening

[ ] I am NOT pregnant. Laser treatment is not recommended during pregnancy due to the lack of safety data.
[ ] I have NOT used oral isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past 6 to 12 months.
[ ] I have NOT had recent sun exposure, spray tan, or self-tanner on the areas to be treated in the past 4 weeks. Tanned skin increases the risk of burns and pigmentation changes.
[ ] I do NOT have an active skin infection, open wound, or inflammatory skin condition such as eczema or psoriasis in the planned treatment area.
[ ] I am NOT taking photosensitizing medications such as certain antibiotics (tetracyclines), antifungals, or diuretics that increase skin sensitivity to light.
[ ] I have disclosed any history of cold sores, as laser treatment around the mouth area can trigger herpes simplex outbreaks.
[ ] I have disclosed any history of keloid scarring or abnormal wound healing.
[ ] I have disclosed any hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) that cause excess hair growth and may affect long-term results.
[ ] I have shaved the treatment area within 24 hours of this appointment and have NOT waxed, plucked, or used depilatory creams in the past 4 weeks.

Risks and Possible Side Effects

Redness and swelling: expected after each session. The treated follicles become temporarily inflamed. This usually resolves within a few hours to 48 hours.
Skin irritation and sensitivity: a mild sunburn-like sensation is normal after treatment. Cool compresses and gentle moisturizer are recommended.
Pigmentation changes: lighter or darker patches of skin may appear after treatment, especially in patients with medium to dark skin tones or those who have had recent sun exposure. Most resolve within a few months with proper sun protection. Some may be longer-lasting.
Burns and blistering: rare when the correct device settings are used for the patient's skin type. Risk is higher when tanned skin is treated. Any blister should be reported to the clinic immediately.
Paradoxical hair stimulation: rarely, laser treatment stimulates rather than reduces hair growth in certain areas, particularly in patients with hormonal imbalances or when IPL is used on darker skin. This is most commonly seen in facial areas and the upper arms.
Scarring: rare, but possible if a blister or wound is not properly cared for. Following post-treatment care instructions reduces this risk significantly.
Eye injury: laser light can permanently damage eyesight if it reaches the eyes. Protective eyewear is required for all patients and staff during the session and will be provided.
Incomplete hair removal: results vary between individuals. Some patients require more sessions than the standard treatment series to achieve satisfactory reduction.

Alternatives to Laser Hair Removal

Electrolysis: the only FDA-cleared method for permanent hair removal. Works on all hair colors and skin types. Each follicle must be treated individually, making it time-intensive for large areas.
Waxing and threading: temporary removal methods that must be repeated regularly. Waxing removes hair at the root; results last 3 to 6 weeks.
Shaving and depilatory creams: the most accessible options, removing hair at the skin surface. Results last days to weeks.
No treatment: choosing not to proceed with laser sessions does not affect access to other care at this clinic.

What to Expect from Results

Most patients see a 70 to 90 percent reduction in hair growth after a full course of 6 to 8 sessions. Individual results depend on hair color, skin type, the area treated, and hormonal factors. Laser hair removal is most effective on dark, coarse hair. Blonde, red, grey, and white hairs contain little melanin and respond poorly to laser energy. Results are not permanent for all patients. Annual maintenance sessions may be needed to manage regrowth, especially in patients with hormonal conditions.

Post-Treatment Care Requirements

After each session, the patient agrees to: (1) Avoid sun exposure on treated areas for at least 2 weeks and apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily. (2) Avoid heat-generating activities including saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. (3) Do not pick at, scratch, or exfoliate treated areas during healing. (4) Apply cool compresses or aloe vera gel to soothe treated areas if needed. (5) Do not wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams between sessions. Shaving is permitted. (6) Contact the clinic if any blister, burn, or unusual skin change develops.

Eye Safety Acknowledgment

I understand that laser light can cause permanent eye damage. I agree to wear the protective eyewear provided by the clinic throughout the entire treatment session. I will not remove the eyewear during the treatment, even briefly. I understand that failure to keep protective eyewear in place during laser use is a serious safety risk.

Right to Refuse or Pause Treatment

The patient may ask the technician to pause or stop treatment at any time during the session. Pre-paid treatment packages are non-refundable for sessions already completed but the remaining unused sessions retain their value. The patient may pause their treatment series and resume within [Provider to specify: e.g. 12 months] without additional charges.
