Nature of Couples Counseling

Couples counseling is a specialized therapeutic process designed to help partners understand relationship patterns, resolve conflicts, and enhance communication. In couples counseling, the relationship itself (the couple as a unit) is the primary client. While your counselor may occasionally schedule individual sessions with one partner to support the relationship's goals, these individual contacts are secondary. Your counselor will not act as an individual therapist for either partner during or after couples treatment.

Strict No-Secrets Policy

To maintain therapeutic trust and transparency, this practice operates under a strict 'No-Secrets' Policy. Any information shared by one partner in private communications (including individual sessions, phone calls, emails, or text messages) that is relevant to the couples counseling process will not be kept confidential from the other partner. The counselor will actively assist and encourage the partner who disclosed the information to share it in a joint session. If the sharing partner refuses, the counselor reserves the right to disclose that information directly to the other partner or terminate the couples counseling process.

Joint Confidentiality and Record Releases

Clinical records generated during couples counseling belong to the couple unit, not the individuals. Therefore, to protect the privacy of both partners, no clinical files, progress summaries, or notes will be released to outside parties (including courts, attorneys, or other doctors) unless BOTH partners sign a written release of information. Exceptions to this joint confidentiality are governed by state law and include: (1) suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or disabled person; (2) imminent threat of serious self-harm or suicide; (3) imminent threat of physical violence to a third party; or (4) a judge's direct court order.

Crisis and Emergency Protocol

This practice provides scheduled outpatient counseling. If a severe relationship crisis involving physical domestic violence, child safety issues, or acute psychiatric emergency arises, do not wait for a counselor's response. Immediately call emergency services (911), contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233), call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to the nearest emergency medical facility.

Fees and Cancellation Policies

Session fees are [insert amount] per joint session, due at the time of service. Both partners are jointly and severally responsible for all outstanding fees. A minimum of 24 hours notice is required to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations or no-shows will incur a standard cancellation fee. In couples counseling, if one partner is unable to attend, the session will be cancelled or rescheduled, as the counselor will not conduct a couples counseling session with only one partner present.
